SPOTshot ("the app") is a camera application that captures geotagged photos and sends them, as Cursor-on-Target (CoT) markers, to a TAK (Team Awareness Kit) server that you configure. This policy explains what the app accesses, why, and where your data goes. We designed SpotShot to keep your data on your device and on the server you choose — we do not operate a backend and we do not collect your data.
Who receives your data?
SpotShot sends your captures only to the TAK server you configure in the app. That server is operated by you or your organization — not by Whitwerx LLC. We have no server, account system, or analytics that receive your information. We cannot see your photos, locations, or messages.
Information the app accesses
- Camera — to take the photos you capture. Photos are sent to your configured TAK server and stored temporarily on your device.
- Location (precise/approximate) — to geotag each photo and, if you enable Position Reporting, to share your position with your TAK server so your team can see your location on their map. Location is used only while the app or its foreground service is active; the app does not access your location in the background without a visible notification.
- Photos/Media (read) — only to let you import a TAK data package or certificate file you select. The app does not scan or upload your photo library.
- Notifications — to show the required status notification while Position Reporting is running.
Foreground location service
- When you turn on Position Reporting (PLI), SpotShot runs a foreground service that periodically sends your location to your configured TAK server. A persistent notification is shown the entire time this is active. The feature is off by default and can be turned off at any time in Settings. Location is not used for advertising and is never sold.
Optional AI image description (opt-in)
- If — and only if — you enter your own Anthropic API key in Settings, SpotShot sends the photo you capture to Anthropic's Claude API (api.anthropic.com) to generate a text description that is added to the marker's remarks. This is entirely optional, off by default, and uses your own API key. If you do not enter a key, no photo ever leaves your device except to your configured TAK server. Anthropic's handling of that data is governed by Anthropic's own privacy terms.
Data stored on your device
- Captured photos (in the app's private storage / cache) and a queue of any spots awaiting transmission.
- Your server profile(s), callsign, certificates, and app settings.
- A local transfer log of what you have sent.
This data stays in the app's private storage. The app includes a Secure Wipe feature (Settings → Secure Wipe) that permanently erases all of it on demand.
What we do NOT do
- We do not collect, sell, or share your personal information.
- We do not use advertising or third-party analytics/tracking SDKs.
- We do not create accounts or require you to register with us.
- We do not access your location in the background without a visible notification.
Children
- SpotShot is a professional field tool and is not directed to children under 13.
Changes
- We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
